The Future of Science

For the future of science education to be bright, it must also be acknowledged that there are certain policies in place in US that actually hinder it like the No Child Left Behind implementation. No Child Left Behind focuses on math and English that’s why it is a direct threat to the proliferation of science in the education system. In fact, children who went to school during the No Child Left Behind era had little to no science education for seven years starting from the time they were in kindergarten. As such, they didn’t do well in science when they entered middle school and beyond. The US simply made an entire generation illiterate in science. Few kids even know what an earthquake kit is. Science & Obama

But all is not lost because the Obama administration has recognized that science education is important in the 21st century, highlighting the need for a better national science education program to be in place. All Americans need top-notch STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education because that will inspire them to care more about their world, engage in exploration, and get involved in intellectual work. it also so happens that the Center on Education and the Workforce has reported that come 2018, there will be about eight million openings for jobs in STEM-related fields. If the US does not pick up the pace, it’s going to miss out on a wealth of employment opportunities that can drastically boost the economy.

What PISA Tells Us

In 2009, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) found that US students ranked 17th out of 34 developed countries when it comes to science. For math, it was a surprisingly lower 25th out of 34. PISA also revealed the US students are among the most unequal-performing in the world, with those achieving more academically if they have good socio-economic statuses. Another study in 2009, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also drive the problem home, showing that only 18% of 4th graders in New York and 13% of the state’s eight graders are performing at or beyond the science proficient level.

What is the Solution?

So all schools should simply just pay more attention to science, giving the same kind of attention to English and math? Is that the way to ensure a bright future for the US economy? The answer is unfortunately no. That is not enough. It’s a good first step to devote more hours in school every week to science but treating it as just another subject to be tested on will not bring about real engagement, creativity, passion, and innovative thinking that science has been so well-known to stimulate. Students will simply be technical and that is not the way to go.

The De-Valuation of Science

There is also growing evidence that show that certain schools are biased towards focusing on tested subjects and de-prioritizing those less frequently tested such as science, maybe to avoid having to hire an injury lawyer should a science experiment go wrong. And when science is do taught, there is not actual learning since students generally turn to simply memorizing what they are taught and answering questions on a textbook. For students to fully grasp science, it has to be taught within real-world scenarios to aid children in adapting what they’ve learned in school in their everyday life.

What Research Suggests


So how well are children from the US, the future of the country, doing so far? Unfortunately, not good. Recent national studies done show that in the elementary levels, science is barely taught to students. Over eight hours a week are devoted to teaching ELA, or English Language Arts and more than five are allotted for math, while science only gets less than three hours of attention during the time that children are in school every week. Kids are more focused on new cars than their own schooling and their living quarters! The situation is even worse in some schools that have been deemed by review boards to be in need of improvement. In their case, science is completely eclipsed by certain subjects given priority because the students will be tested on them. Research has shown that these schools are also those that usually register high numbers of children of color and poor children.
