No Child Left Behind focuses on math and English that’s why it is a direct threat to the proliferation of science in the education system. For math, it was a surprisingly lower 25th out of 34. Recent national studies done show that in the elementary levels, science is barely taught to students. Over eight hours a week are devoted to teaching ELA, or English Language Arts and more than five are allotted for math, while science only gets less than three hours of attention during the time that children are in school every week. Kids are more focused on new cars than their own schooling and their living quarters! The situation is even worse in some schools that have been deemed by review boards to be in need of improvement. In their case, science is completely eclipsed by certain subjects given priority because the students will be tested on them. Research has shown that these schools are also those that usually register high numbers of children of color and poor children.
